Timaru

(From our own correspondent.) For wealth of material and perfection of workmanship it would be hard to imagine anything richer or in more harmonious keeping with its purpose than the high altar just erected in the Sacred Heart Church, Timaru. The base is formed of red serpentine marble, with pilasters above of alabaster inlaid with beautiful panels of Irish marble. Resting on these is the altar table of fine stone from Oney Park. ' From the back rise steps in figured alabaster, inlaid with various kinds of marble. At each side of the table proper are figures in statuary marble, with coves at back of same in onyx. The base of the canopy rises from the floor, and is supported on figured columns of alabaster. The superimposed cupola, supported on'' columns, of red marble, gives a magnificent finish and head to the whole structure. The side altars are also of figured marble, and are built on simple direct lines. The high altar is a splendid example of true mosaic work. The quarries of the whole world were put under contribution to obtain the necessary variety and quality of stones desired.
