Eighty-three schools competed, and the Timaru Marist School gained the first place by the substantial lead of 4 points in the average score. The 0.C., howeverj understood from the regulations, and from a conversation he had with a cadet official, that boys who had passed the sixth standard, /being secondary school pupils, were not permitted to compete as junior cadets, and therefore did not forward the score of the four ! boys in the seventh standard. - When informed by the Department that this’.was not correct, he immediately forwarded the scores and targets of the four secondary scholars, but the Department, after carefully considering the matter, has "decided that although the "inclusion of these boys’ scores would have increased their lead, the shield cannot be awarded to them, as the scores of the four last were not in on December 13, the time for, closing the entries. The performance of the school is extremely creditable, as schools throughout the Dominion were competitors. The competition, too, is not for selected shots, but in averages of whole companies. Oamaru ' • - (From out own correspondent.) ■ May 7. ; ■> A very pleasant function took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. P. Ford yesterday, when the venerable couple celebrated their golden wedding, surrounded by their eleven children, a majority of their 39 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, as well as a host of relatives and friends.. It was a joyous gathering that assembled to do honor to and congratulate the bride and groom of fifty years, who have shared the hardships of pioneer days, and are now beloved and respected by all who know them. At the anniversary breakfast Right Rev. Mgr. Mackay, V.G., presided, and proposed the toast of the occasion,\Mr. Ford replying. Rev. Fathers Farthing and Lynch were also present, During the day and evening Mr. and Mrs. Ford received countless messages of congratulation and goodwill, and were visited by numbers of their friends and relatives from all parts. • • Gisborne .
