Ashburton

(From our own correspondent.) v - Very Rev. Dean O’Donnell leaves Ashburton this week for a couple of months’ sojourn in the Lakes district (Queenstown). V Members of the St. Mary’s Tennis Club are frequent in their attendance on the playing courts. Much interest is manifested in the tournament games now in progress. V - The local Hibernian Society recently held their half-yearly meeting. The report and balance sheet showed the society to be in a sound position financially and otherwise. Mr. Frank Brophy, of the local branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Co-operative Association, has received notice of his promotion to the firm’s Methven branch. Mr. Brophy will be much missed in Catholic Club life in this town. The weekly meetings of the Catholic Young Men’s Club continue to be well attended. The programme for last Tuesday evening took the form of a progressive euchre tournament, the prize for the winner being donated by Mr. J. Brankin. Messrs. M. J. Moriarty and J. Lennon superintended the arrangements. A pleasant contest eventuated in Mr. J. Gorman securing the prize.
