DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

As a conclusion to their season the members of St. Josephus Ladies’ Club will hold a social in the Victoria Hall on October 27. The members of the Christian . Brothers’ Old Boys’ Association and their lady friends will hold a picnic at Quarantine Island on Labor Day. It was announced at all the Masses at St. Joseph’s Cathedral on Sunday that the mission by the Redemptorist Fathers will commence in the Cathedral on next Sunday week. There was a fair attendance of-members at the weekly meeting of St. Joseph’s Men’s Club on Monday evening, when a debate was held on the possible utility of our defence scheme in the event of invasion. Mr. Gallagher, who defended the system from the attacks of its traducers, brought forward a considerable amount of evidence in support of his position, and quoted the opinions- of military and naval authorities who had expressed their approbation of and confidence in its success. Mr. Spain, in opposing Mr. Gallagher, contented himself with showing the inadequateness of our sea protection and our .vulnerability to attack from that direction. Messrs. Higgins, Moynihan, A twill, and Hannagan-also took part in the discussion.
