Hawera

(From an occasional correspondent.^ October 2. At the recent examination of the Convent School, Hawera, the results were very gratifying to the teaching staff and to the pupils. The chief inspector of the Wanganui Education Board (Mr. Braik) remarks as follows: —'The organisation of the school is entirely satisfactory. Schemes of work and lesson programmes are kept by each teacher, and they are of real service in the distribution, arrangement, and effectiveness of the school work. The classification of pupils is even and well considered. A high standard of efficiency is maintained in each of the departments. The pupils were examined in English and arithmetic, and the majority did credit to themselves and their teachers. The setting out of the sums and the writing of the English papers were neat and careful, and the work itself was uniformly accurate. The oral answering was, like the reading, distinct and expressive, and all the pupils did their share. Of course there were cases of individual weakness in subjects, but they were not numerous, nor were they such as may not be easily remedied. Singing in Standard VI. and handwork in the infant room may bo singled out as especial fine features. As has been their wont, the pupils behaved with the utmost propriety, and I saw nothing in their conduct that was not creditable to themselves and their teachers.' At the meeting of the Education Board at which the report was read it was resolved that the head teacher be complimented on the work of the school. The above must be specially gratifying to those Catholic parents who support the school, while at the same time it affords a proof to those parents who may be inclined to doubt the fact that ' education ' in the truest sense of the word is to be obtained in the Catholic school, and that while religious instruction ever holds first place, the secular branches are far from being neglected.
