SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

LADIES’ GUILD, THORN DON t : ' - ' _ ' ' ' ' The following are the report and balance sheet presented at the first annual meeting of the Ladies’ Guild of the St, Vincent do Paul Society, Thorndon, Wellington; The above guild was established a little over a year ago, and may justly claim to have supplied a long-felt want. The members have attended 54 weekly meetings; the sick and poor visited at their homes; children brought to the church for Baptism homes found for others who were destitute; parcels of clothing (new and second-hand) distributed; and various other needs supplied, details of which are given below. Owing to a suitable meeting-room not being available at the presbytery or school, we were obliged to procure a room in Guildford terrace at a rental of 8s per week, including light. As the men’s conference also hold their meetings in this room, half the amount is paid by them. We have applied for aggregation with the Ladies’ Particular Council in Adelaide, and the Council General, Bologna (Italy). We are also represented on the board of the Ladies’ Particular Council, recently formed in Wellington. The sewing guild meets every Thursday evening at 7.30 at a room in Guildford terrace, where any ladies wishing to share in this good work will be cordially welcomed. In connection with this particular branch, a sewing machine and other articles of furniture were purchased. We tender our sincere thanks to those honorary members who have materially helped us; to others who sent parcels of clothing; to the men’s branch, who have always attended promptly to any cases brought under their notice by us; and, lastly, to the spiritual director, Rev. Father Peoples, for the interest and attention he has shown in the work of the conference since its formation.
