A Christchurch message states that the City Council has resolved to call for designs for a Town Hall, to cost £60,000, and to seat 3000. The premiums offered are £250 and £IOO, and the designs must be in by January 10, 1911. A hearty laugh was raised at a recent meeting of the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association in Timaru, when one of the speakers drew attention to the fact that the directors had granted £5 towards the search for the South Pole. The speaker said he thought the directors had not a very clear idea of their duty to throw away money like that, and he assured them that they would find neither gold nor broadleaf posts down there.
