The deceased nun, who was a daughter of the late Mr. Michael Wallace, of Bathurst, had been a member of the Sisterhood of St. Joseph for thirty years. Father Barrett, who has taken ah active part in the discussion of public questions on several occasions, submitted himself to the suffrages of the citizens, and there being an insufficiency of candidates for the vacancies he will be duly declared elected. By a recent mail Monsignor Barry, who is administering the diocese of Sandhurst during the Bishop’s absence in Europe, received a letter from Dr. Reville, in which his Lordship stated that both he and Bishop Corbett (Sale) were then at Lourdes, and were to visit Germany to witness the ‘Passion’ Play. Thence Dr. Reville intended proceeding to Ireland. At the time of writing, July .7, both Bishops were in good health. A very interesting function took place at Carcoar on August 9, comprising a welcome to the Rev. Father O’Keefe and a send-off to the Rev. Father O’Keefe has been appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the Archdeacon, and Father O’Brien has now been transferred to the parish of Orange. Father O’Keefe was made the recipient of an illuminated address of welcome, and received an address from the pupils of St. Mary’s High School. The people of Careoar also presented the departing pastor, Father O’Brien, with a purse of sovereigns. The new church at Bungaree was on Sunday, August 14, opened by his Lordship Bishop Higgins in the presence of a crowded congregation. Society, numbering about 600, and a squad of cadets (about 150 in number) from Nudgee College under Brother Carroll, formed a guard of honor for his Eminence Cardinal Moran ..(accompanied by Monsignor O’Haran), his Grace Archbishop Dunne, and his Lordship Bishop 'Duhig of Rockhampton; 'also for his Excellency Sir William Macgregor, His Excellency, accompanied by Lady, and Miss Macgregor, was received by the Cardinal, the Archbishop of Brisbane, and prominent members of the clergy and laity. Addresses ere delivered by his Eminence the Cardinal, his Excellency the Governor, Hon. E. B. Forrest, and others. Subscriptions received at the ceremony amounted to £2500, the total to date being £20,000. His Excellency Sir William Macgregor, speaking at the opening of the Mater Misericordise Hospital, Brisbane, on August 14, said that to dedicate and open such a fine hospital would be a notable event under any circumstances, but, from the manner in which the dedication had taken place, he thought the event was not only a memorable one, but, perhaps, one that was unique, either in this country, or in any other country of the world. They had with them two of the most venerable prelates in the Catholic Church. In the first place they had with them his Eminence the Archbishop, the first Cardinal in Australasia. Not only was Cardinal Moran a Prince of his Church, but he was one of the greatest living authorities in many points of scholarship. Doubtless many of those present were aware that the learned men of Europe, of America, and of Australia very frequently referred to the works of his Eminence, whose fame and reputation as a scholar would live long after he had passed away. It was a great honor and a great pleasure to them to have with them such a man as his Eminence. Then, again," they had with them his Grace the Archbishop of Brisbane, He had known his Grace for more than a score of years, and he was sure lie could safely say: there was not in Queensland a man more generally beloved than was Archbishop, Dunne. They had in his Grace one of the finest examples of Christian charity and goodwill towards all men. - .
