Invercargill
(From our own correspondent.) August 29. The annual social of St. Mary’s Tennis Club will take place in Ashley’s Hall on September 28. The coming season promises to be a very successful one for the club, and interest is already being evinced by several members and intending members. The opening of the season- will probably take place in September or early in October. In connection with the Invercargill Competitions, which commenced on Wednesday, 24th inst., the opening night being devoted to the drawing-room entertainment, the Southland Times of Thursday says:—-‘With regard to the drawing-room entertainment itself, an admirable feature was the stage setting. The scene which met the gaze of the audience when the curtain was first raised was that of an artistically arranged drawing-room, with decorations and subdued lighting in perfect taste. The entire credit for this effective piece of stage-craft is due to Mr. J. McNamara (of Messrs. Broad, Small and Co.), and when the Mayor publicly acknowledged the indebtedness of the Society to that gentleman, the audience endorsed his remarks with the cordial approval with which they had greeted their first glimpse of the "drawing-room,” except that on the latter occasion the applause was a direct personal com-
pliment to Mr. McNamara.’ Mr. McNamara is a prominent member of our congregation in Invercargill.
