DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND
(By Telegraph from our own correspondent.) January 31. Rev. Father Whelan, C.SS.R., is giving missions on the East Coast, south of Auckland. Rev, Father Creagh, C.SS.R., left for Rotorua last Saturday, and opened a mission there yesterday morning. The retreat of the clergy of the diocese, which was conducted by Rev. Father Creagh, C.SS.R., was brought to a close last Friday morning. Nearly 40 priests attended the retreat, twelve of whom were members of St. Joseph’s Foreign Missionary Society. Mr, and Mrs. James J. O’Brien are leaving for an extended tour by P. and O. steamer from Auckland next month. It has been decided, to extend to them a farewell by the Catholic community, for which both have done so. much in generous monetary offerings and indefatigable labors. ° Rev. Fathers Lynch and Gilmartin (Redemptorists) opened a mission at Onehunga yesterday. The opening sermon in the morning was preached by the Rev. Father Gilmartin, and in the evening by the Rev. Father Lynch. On both occasions the church was crowded. The mission will be continued for a fortnight. The local morning paper to-day, in its leading columns, said : ‘The Asquith Government would be immediately transformed into a minority if the Nationalists went over to the enemy as a protest against any. administrative refusal to
pay a disloyal price for their support.’ It concludes the article by saying : ‘Or perhaps the Nationalist Othello fears to see his occupation gone.’ After all, in this so-called liberal age, how hard prejudice dies. ■ ■ A large meeting was held yesterday afternoon in the Marist Brothers’ School to take steps for . the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. His Lordship the Bishop presided, and there were also present Rev. Fathers Holbrook, Brennan, and Williams. His Lordship briefly explained the object of the gathering, and stated that a sum of £230 had been netted by the last St. Patrick’s Day celebration. This had been placed on fixed deposit until it should reach £2OOO, when it would be devoted, as originally intended, to the diocesan schools. He urged all to work hard and harmoniously to achieve even better results than last year. Mr. Nerheny was appointed chairman of the committee, Mr. Woodley treasurer, and Mr. M. J. Sheahan secretary. It was decided to hold the fete again at Devonport racecourse. The preliminary arrangements were made, . and with one alteration of cateringit was decided to go on similar lines to those of last year. His Lordship announced that 80 acres of land at Lucas Creek had been presented to the schools’ maintenance fund by Mr. Thomas Darby. It was decided to meet again next Sunday at to*, same place. A vote of thanks to the Bishop for presiding terminated the meeting.
