The , Grey mouth elocutionary contest, which opened on October 7, was brought to a close on Friday evening. ' During the season large audiences filled the Town" Hall, and demonstrated their appreciation of .the work achieved by the various clubs during the past year. The standard of elocution was much higher than in previous years, and, consequently, competition in the various events was keen and t spirited. It was only after prolonged deliberation and- a -thorough balancing" of the finer points of elocution that the judges succeeded in placing the candidates. Six gold and four silver medals were, offered for individual -merit/ and a silver cup "for the club gaining the most points. The judges were "Rev. E. D. Rice (Ross) and Messrs. H. C. Michel (Hokitika) -and F. J. Munro (Westport) The chair "was occupied by the. Mayor (Mr. T. E. Cq'ates). The following are the results: — Prepared speech — E. Casey (St. Columba Club), 3. Four clubs entered for the compete tions — St. Columba, Trinity Institute. (Anglican), Greymouth Mutual Improvement {Presbyterian), and Greymouth - Young Men's. The St. Columba Club gained 12 points in the - competition, Greymouth „- Young - Men's Club being second with 5 points.- " The .challenge cup was presented two years ago, and had to be won three times in succession five times at intervals. The St. Columba Club has thus won it outright, being placed' first three times in succession, and it noty becomes their property.
