DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

The devotion of the Forty Hours' Adoration begins in St. Patrick's Basilica, South Dunedin, on Friday morning. The annual General Communion of the members of the Hibernian Society takes place at the nine o'clock Mass at St. Joseph's Cathedral on Sunday. The annual breakfast will be held in St. Joseph's Hall after Mass. On the Feast of Our Lady' of Mercy, September 24, Miss Annie Kerr (in religion, Sister Bernardine), of Dacre, Southland, made her solemn profession in the Convent Chapel, South Dunedin. His Lordship the Bishop performed the ceremony, and was assisted by the Rev. Fathers O'Malley and D. O'Neill. On Sunday afternoon, at the . invitation of the Sisters of Mercy, South Dunedin, the stall-holders at the recent Nui Nui Fair, with their assistants and friends, assembled in the spacious and prettily decorated study hall of the college. A short but choice programme of vocal and instrumental items was gone through by the pupils of St. Philomena's, after which these young ladies handed round afternoon tea to the gue§ts. "At a suitable interval in the proceedings Mr. J. J. Marlow, on behalf of the Sisters of Mercy, thanked the ladies and gentlemen who had worked with such untiring energy and made the Nui Nui Fair an unqualified success. It was the intention of the Sisters, on' the previous Wednesday, to entertain their kind friends, but, finding that all could not conveniently attend on a week day, advantage was taken of Sunday afternoon. On Sunday last at the nine o'clock Mass at St. Joseph's Cathedral eighty children from the parish made their First Communion. The boys were in charge of the Christian Brothers and the girls were under the care of the Children of Mary. It' delighted the large congregation present to see the orderly way' in which the children approached to and withdrew from the altar rails, and the perfect way in which everything was carried out reflects great credit on the Christian Brothers and the Dominican Nuns, who left nothing undone to make the children realise the import attached to theh\' First Communion day. After Mass his Lordship the Bishop gave a short instruction to the children, and imparted to them his blessing. They then marched in processionto St. Joseph's Hall, where they were entertained at breakfast by the members of the Ladies' Club. In the afternoon they again assembled ab the Cathedral and took part in the procession of the Holy Rosary and assisted at Benediction in* the evening. A -further pleasing feature .in connection with the nine o'clock Mass was the edifying sight- of the members v of the Christian Brothers' Football Club, to the number of fifty, receiving Holy Communion, in a body. The devotion of the Forty Hours' 1 Adoration began in St. Joseph's Cathedral on Friday morning with the celebration of Solemn High Mass at M'hich his Lordship the Bishop presided. Rev. Father O'Reilly was celebrant, Rev. Father Morkane (Lawrence) deacon, Rev. . M. Scanlan (Holy Cross College) subdeacon, and Rev. Father Corcoran master of ceremonies. The music of the Mass was sung by the students of Holy Cross College. - After Mass there was a procession of the Blessed Sacrament. There was Solemn High Mass. at the Cathedral at eleven o'clock on Sunday, when his Lordship the Bishop presided.

Rev. Father O'Reilly was celebrant, Rev. Father Lynch,C.SS.R., deacon, and Rev. C. Collins (Holy Cross College) subdeacon. In the afternoon the usual procession in coiinection with Rosary Sunday, consisting of the parish confraternities and the .children who had made their First Communion in the morning, took place from St. Joseph's schoolroom to the Cathedral. The adoration was brought to a close by a procession and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament after Vespers in the evening. The, devotion was very well attended and very large numbers approached the Holy Table at the early Masses on- Sundayi The tasteful decorations of the high altar reflected much credit on Misses Murphy and White.,
