Ashburton
" (From an occasional correspondent.) August 21. I have to congratulate the Catholic school football team on their success in winning the schools seven-aside tournament, played here last month under the management . f the Ashburton Rugby Union, eight teams competing. The boys deserve great credit for the manly and scientific display of the Rugby game. They met the High School A team in the final, and played nine five-minutes spells before a score was registered. D. McCormick nipped, the ball and scored a clever try amid great cheering. The whole team played a hard game, and their splendid footwork, combined with headwork, won- them the medals. The boys received a great ovation from the spectators, and some were carried shoulder-high by the union officials. (From our own correspondent.) The usual weekly meeting of the Ashburton Catholic Club was held on Tuesday evening, when the programme was a mock banquet. Several toasts were honored, and a musical programme was gone through, the following contributing: Songs, .Mesprs. W. B. Keaney, T. Berry, and D. McCormick; recitations, Messrs. F. K. Cooper, F. Hanrahan, W. B. Keaney, and C. Cooper. On Wednesday evening the Ladies' Catholic Club tendered an 'At home ' to the Young Men's Catholic Club. Progressive euchre was played for an hour, and a musical entertainment was given. Miss C. Buckley won the lady's prize, and" Mr. M. M. Murphy the gentleman's. The following contributed to the programme : Pianoforte solo, Miss Soal ; songs, Misses McCormick and Nealon, Messrs. D. McDonald, W. Keaney, and V. Madden. Accompaniments were played by "Misses McCormick, Soal, and Nealon. During the evening the members of the Ashburton Catholic Club presented Mr. Keaney, who is leaving the town, with a handsome travelling rug. Mr. Brophy, in making the presentation, spoke in high terms of the way in which Mr. Keaney was esteemed by the members of the club. It had been through Mr. Keaney's efforts that the dramatic branch of the club had been formed.. Other members also spoke of the sterling qualities of Mr. Keaney, and one and all wish him success. , Refreshments were then handed round by the ladies.
