Temuka
(From our own correspondent.)
The Temuka Catholic Football Club (Athletics) played their' first games in the Rugby Union competitions on Thursday, and were most successful, both teams securing a win. Some very good form was shown by players, and Mr. S. Coughlan has the honor of scoring the first try for the new club.
The current session of the Catholic Club was opened on Tuesday night with a social gathering. There were about 60 members present, and the president (Mr. C. A. Winn) occupied the chair. There were also present the Rev. Fathers Le Floch and Kimbell. After the toast of the ' Pope and King ' was duly honored, the president thanked the members for the honor they had conferred on him by electing him to the position he occupied. He referred to the losses which the club had sustained. Some of the members- had left the district, but the attendance that night led him to hope that it would become more flourishing than ever this year. The club had suffered a great loss in the removal of Rev. Father McDonald, who had made great efforts in the advancement of the club; but they were fortunate in getting as his successor Father Le Floch. He trusted further efforts would be made to develop the literary side of the club. A number of toasts • were then proposed and duly responded to. In the course of their remarks, several of the speakers dwelt at length on the advantages of the i;lub, and whilst admitting that athletics were desirable, yet they would much prefer to see the young men take a part in literary anoL debating societies, and so frlr-themselves for the serious business of life. The Rev. Fathers Le Floch and Kimbell also addressed the meeting. The latter urged on members of the football club to play the game manfully, and take a defeat like men. The following contributed songs: — Messrs. S. Coughlan, C. and W. Spillane, Wm. Jeffries, and J. Brosnan. Messrs. R. Wareing and T. Buckley gave a recitation and step-dance respectively. The billiard tournament, in which about 25 members took part, has just concluded, the winners being Messrs. M. Brosnan, T. Creedy, and J. Tangney.
