DUNEDIN WOOL SALE

The second series of the Dunedin wool sales was held on Monday in the Art Gallery Hall, when a total offering of 20,366 bales was submitted _at auction. This constitutes a record for Dunedin (says the Otago Daily Times). The individual catalogues were as follow, given in the order in which they were sold: — National Mortgage and Agency Co. (Ltd.), 2090; Otago Farmers' Co-operative Association, 1345; Wright, Stephenson, and Co., 5671; Donald Reid and Co., 2850; Stronach, Morris, and Co., 1733; Dalgety and Co., 4850; N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., 1827; total, 20,366. The attendance of buyers was large, and representative of all British, Continental, and American centres. Buyers from all the New Zealand woollen mills were also present, and the tenches also held a considerable number of fellmongers and speculators from all parts of ihe Dominion. The general quality of the clip was quite equal to that of last year, and the wools from Central Otago and certain other districts showed a decided improvement on last season's clip. Bidding was animated throughout the entire sale, and the large gathering of Avool-growers who attended the auction appeared highly satisfied with the figures realised. Every section of the buyers took their share ,the wools being fairly well distributed amongst the representatives from the various countries. The top price, 13Id, was paid for two bales of fine crossbred hogget wool, bred by Messrs. G. and J. dimming, Arthurton 3 and sold by Messrs. Donald Reid and Co. One very noticeable feature of the sale was the extreme figures paid for crossbred hoggets of long, sound staple. These wools in nearly every instance appeared very dear as compared with the ewe wools of eqiial quality of the same brands, the former fetching in many instances from l£d to 3d per lb more than the latter. Prices realised were : — Merino, super, lOd to 12£ d; medium to good, B^d to 9*d; inferior, 63d to 73d; half bred, super, lO^d to 12id; medium to good, 8d to lOd; inferior, 6Jd to 7Jd ; crossbred, super, lO^d to 13£ d; good, 9d to lO^d; medium, 6.jd to 83d; inferior, 5d to 6£d. Taken all round, the prices showed an advance on those realised last year.

On a clear day, any moving object can be discerned across the South African veldt at a distance of 25 miles with the naked eye. Thousands of dog and goat farms are scattered over the northern districts of Mongolia and Manchuria., On each farm from ten to several hundred animals are reared annually, all of which are ultimately killed for the sake of their skins.
