OBITUARY

MISS MARGARET POWEB, NIGHTCAPS. 1

(From an occasional correspondent.) Qudte a gloom was Cast over the ' distrdqt when it became known that Mss Margaret Power, third "daughter of Mr* Thomas Power, J.P., Wrey's Bush, had passed to h!er eternal reward. The deceased had been aildng for some time, but it was • only a- few days before her death that she had to take to her bed, amd from that time she gradually sanik, passing peacefully away, fortified by the rites of/ Holy Church. Deceased haft the consolation of 'Having the Sisters of Mercy at her bedside for hours previous to her death. Her demise at th* early age of 26 years has been felt by a large circle of friends, whose esteem she had won by her gentle and amiable disposition." The funeral was one of the largest seen in the district for some time, the cortege including the Convent school children and • the Children of Mary in regalia, of which sodality deceased was a member. REV. FATHER P. VEALE, AUCKLAND. I regret to record the death at the Miserioordiae Hospital on Tuesday morning of the Rev. Father Peter Ve a le, at. the age of 27 years (writes our Auckland correspondent). The deceased was born at Cappoquin County Waterford, Ireland, and made his studies a t Mount Melleray Monastery and St. Peter's College Wexford, where he was ordained^ l a st year. On. his arrival in Auckland in December last he was in a very bail state of health!, and was recornmendied by Bishop Lenihan to rest at the Mater Miserieordiae Hospital where, under the tender care of the devoted Sisters of Mercy, it was hoped he might recuperate. But he gradually failed until the end came on Tuesday morn- " ing. During his last hours he was surrounded by all the Sisters. of Mercy, and Fathers Holbrook, Edge, Murphy, Farthing, Williams, and Bradley. The remains were removed to St. Patrick's Cathedral on Tuesday eventing, and on Wednesday morning a Solemn Kequiem Mass for the repose of h,is soul was celebrated by the Right Rev. Mgr. O'Reilly, Rev. Father Murphy being deacon, Rev. Father Tormey subdeacon, and Rev. Father Holbrook master of ceremonies. The Very Rev. Dean G-illan, V^G-., presided, in the absence of the Bishop. There were also ' present Fathers Furlong, Duffy, .Edge, Zanna, Fartning, Williams,' -Doyle, Maho&ey, Buckley, and Kimbell (Wellington) .~ The last prayers -at the graveside in Panmure were read by Right Rev. Mgr. O'Reilly. A large concourse of people were present at the obsequies. The remains repose in, the little cemetery at Panmure, adjoining the chapel. He leaves a father,- mother, three brothers, and two sisters in Waterford to mourn their loss.-— R.I.P.. ,

MR. MATTHEW HANLEY, GORE. , We regret to record thie death! of a Highly esteemed resident of Gore, in tMe person of Mr. Matthew Hanley,

who passed away on March 2, fortified by the rites of the Church. Thie late Mr. Hanley was born in County Galway in 1834,, and arrived in New-Zealand in 1863. He started farming on a small scale^at"Gr6pjex's Bush K and after a few years removed to Gore, where "he- acquired a holding of aliout two thousand acres, and_ in the management of which he was imost successful. He was a practical and zealous Gathol'ic, and was a generous supporter of the Church. He was greatly respected by a large citcle of friends for .his geniality and upntghtness of cbiarac- . ter. Many messages of condolence were- received; by, the family on their sad loss', among whdch was one from Sur Joseph and Lady Ward. The funeral ,"* which took ■place on March 4, w a s very largely attended, its representative , character bearing testimony to the respect in which deceased was held. The Very Rev. . Father O'Donmell officiated a t " the • graveside, ' assisted by the Rev. Father Murphy. During his last illness he was' attended -by the Very Rev. Father O'Donn^ll, and the Rev. Fathers .Hunt and Campbell, C.SS.R. The late Mr. Hanley was predeceased by his wife -who 'died about eight years ago.
