Stratford
(From our own correspondent.) March B. Our next social, which will be held on St.. Patrick's .night, 'will, with the programme submitted, excel all our previous efforts. The longest .drought ever remembered in Taranaki has at last broken up and rain has fallen ujpon the burnt and parched pastures, ,to the great relief of everyone. Great losses of stock are recorded and, 1 what with grass seed being such a big price and the disastrous season, things are not too bright 'for the 'settlers for the coming winter.
It is with deep regret that I have to record the death of Mr. John Hayes, for many years a - resident of Kaponga, and for the past two years of Stratford, who died, on Friday morning last at New Plymouth, after a long jillness. The late Mr. Hayes by his geniality formed a large circle- of friends, and by his charity, especially to the Church,, endeared himsell to' all. He -died fortified by the rites of the , Church: The Rev. Father Treacy made touching reference to the deceased at both Masses this morning.— R.l. P.
