NAPIER

(From our own correspondent.) December 16. Very Rev:. Father Clunc, C.SS.R., is at present in Napier giving a retreat to the Sisters of the convent. He is to preach in St. Patrick's Church next Sunday evening. Early on. Saturday irorning the Marist Brothers' School was; destroyed by fire, leaving' only a portion of one room standing. This conflagration has destroyed the first Catholic church erected in Napier, and later, when St. Mary's Church was "built, it was added to, and used as a school for the past thirty years. The insurance on the school and fittings amounted to £750. Brother Bhelan, Superior, who had quite recently purchased.a new set of maps to the- value of £20, lost all, there being no insurance. The, -Hibernian banner, which had been so, much admired,, and which was painted by the Sisters of the.pojvvent at : a cost of. £75, was also destroyed, together^-with" the Society's furniture' and part ol the regalia. This loss is partly covered by a policy of £50. -The origin of the fire- is a mystery, as the Brothers left the school at five o'clock the previous evening. ' ■
