GREYMOUTH

(From -our own correspondent.) June 28. There was a large attendance of members at the usual weekly meeting of the St. Columiba Club last Monday evening, when .two new members were elected The item on the syllabus was a debate-, the subject being, ' Should there be a statutory limit to the landed holdings of the individual ?' The affirmative side was taken by Messrs. D. Butler '(leader), W. Packer, E. Casey, and B. J. Phillips, whilst the negative was upheld ~by Rev. Father Taylor, supported by Bro. Arthur and Messrs. W. H. Duffy and A. Fraser. Some very good speeches were made by various members, showing they had a good grasp of their subject. Mr. E Casey (late of Auckland) made his maiden speech nf the club and proved himself a forcible speaker 'and able debater, and is a decided acquisition. The judges (Messrs. P Smyth, T. O'Donnell and J. B. Heffernan) gave their unananimous decision in favor of the affirmative side. A" very pleasant time was spent in St. Colum'bft, Hall last Friday evening, the occasion being a euchre tournament, to which the members invited their lady friends. The ladies' prizes were secured by Miss Ada Gralbraith and "Miss Oliver Adamson, whilst Messrs. J. Stewart and J. Condon won the gentlemen's prizes. During the evening songs were sung by Miss Burger, Miss J. Burke, Messrs. W. Reid, and E. Casey, whilst Mr. P. Smyth contributed a recitation. Miss Alice Priest presided' at the piano. Refreshments, kindly provided toy the ladies, were Ihen handed around.
