DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

The devotion of the Forty Hours 5 Adoration began in St. Patrick's Church, Orepuki, on- Sunday, and was brought to a close on Tuesday morning. It will begin in St.. Oolu|m>ba's Church, Riverton, on next Sunday. Thiere> was Pontifical High Mass at St. Josephs Cathedral on Sunday, the feast of Pentecost. His Lordship the- Bishop was celebrant, Rev. Father Coffey assistant priest, Rev. Father Cleary deacon, Rev. Father Corcoran subdeacon. The occasional sermon was preached by the Rev. Father Coffey, Adm. A mock banquet was held by -the members of St Joseph's Men's Club on Friday evening in St. Joseph's Hall. Rev. Father Coffey presided, and there was a large attendance of members. A lengthy toast list was honored, and several good speeches were delivered during the eivening, snecd'ally noticeable "bcinf; the excellent efforts of several of the younger members. Messrs. The annual collection for the St. Vincent de Paul Society takes place in St. Joseph's Cathedral, St. Patrick!'® Basilica (South Dumedin>), and the Sacred Heart Church (North-East Valley) on the first Sunday in June. It is unnecessary for us to refer to the splendid work tWat is being' done by the ladies of this society. They help the needy, visit and assist the sick, and attend to the moral a»d material welfare of neglected children, who are taken from bad su-roundings and placed where they will be trained up to become useful im©m.bers of society. We understand the funds of the society are very low 'at present, and' unless the ladies, who deviate so much time to this work of charity, have the means their sphere of usefulness must necessarily be considerably curtailed. This would be a very serious matter, especially duiing Ih"> winter, when the calls on the funds a'e more pressing than at any other season. It' is to be hoped that a generous response will be made to the appeal, and by doing so the public will in a practi"al wav show their appreciation oi the efforts of the ladies of the society, and encourage them to persevere in their admirable work.
