Wellington, May 18.— The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the "High Commissioner, dated London, May 17 :— ' Th© wool sales have closed, and the market remains firm. The consumption is good, on account of the brisk trade experienced, and prospects are favorable. Estimated values are as follows :— Fine crossbreds, all grades, Is 2d to Is 4d per Ib ; medium, ll^d to Is l^d ; coarse, lOd to Is 0-|d ,; superior merino, Is to Is 2d per It ; medium,- lid to Is Id ; inferior, 8d to 10id.' Messrs; Stronach, Morris, and Co. report :— RajbSbitsMns.— We held our weekly sals yesterday, (Monday), when the demand was good, and there was Keen competition. Prices advanced^fiom to Id per Ib. We sold early winters to 16d, autumns to 15d and spring Bucks to 13d. As the skins- get -better the competition is k'leener, and we anticipate a further rise. Horse Hair, made from Kid to 19d. Sheepskins.— We offered a fairly large catalogue today. Prices for well-saved bred skins were from £d to I'd better than last week's quotations. Merinos and pelts were hardly so good. We sold a line of halfbreds as high as lid per ft. Fair average skins bringing from Pd to Q|d. Hides.— -We held our fortnightly sale on Thursday last, when we submitted a fair catalogue. Taking prices all round, they were much on a par with our last quotations, although there was not much difference either way. Tallow and Fat. — There is not much coming forward, and the demand being very keen, consignments are easdly quitted. Best rendered tallow, 22s f«d to 26s per cwt ; medium to .good, 18s to 21s : inferior, 15s to 17s fid_; prime caul fat, 16s fd to 18s ; rough fat; from 12s to 16s 6d.
