Wellington, January 7.— The Department .of Industries and Commerce has received, the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated" London, January 5 : — The mutton market is dull. .There is only a small supply of New Zealand on hand. Canterbury brands <are quoted at 4|d and ]N}prth .Island at 4|d" per ' Ib. . River Plate s mu,tton is quoted at 3| per- ft. The stocks "of lamb ,pn hand - are heavy', and -Widely distributed amongst agents, who are puslAhg* sales. Australian lamb is quoted -at 5d per 1b; Ine beef market is steady. <Eheie is a ,good demand for Zealand beef, which is at 3£d "and 3|d for hind - and foiequarters respectively. -There .. are heavy supplies of butter on hand, and tlie market is dull. Some 'holders are forcing sales, and butter buyers -are holding back, • expecting piices to go lower. Choice New Zealand is quoted at 108s., Argent'-ine^ 107s, Australian 102s per cwt. Danish is steady at 122s per- cwt'. The cheese market is firm, wiMi improved demand. New Zealand brands are quoted -at- 62s per- cwt. The hemp market is quiet, but steady, .trood fair grade, oasp^ot, is qiuotcid at. £38 10s, -.and .Jaauiary-^March shipments at. £37 5s per ton. Fair* current Manila, on >epot, is worth £42* per ton. The cocksfoot seed market is firm, and there is a fair demand for better grades. Bright 17lb seed is quoted at 47s per cwt. Ihere 'Is
only a small supply of New Zealand wheat on hand. New Zealand oats are quiet, but firm. Sparrowbills are quoted at 25s per 3«llb, and Danish at- 19s per 3201 b (ex granary).

Messrs. Donald Reld-and Co. (Ltd.) report :— We held- our weekly auction sale- of grain and produce at our stores on\ Monday, when we submitted a small catalogue to a moderate attendance of buyers.' There was good competition for most of the lines on offer, and a clearance was effected a.p prices a shade above late quotations. Values- ruled as under:—
Oats. — The market is almost bare of consignments, and all good to prime feed lots ' arriving are readily - quitted at. prices which .show a slight improvement on late- values. Shippers report that sales for export are not ~ easily effected at present prices, but when actual orders are received they have difficulty in fulfilling their requirements. The demand foi* milling lines has improved. Quotations : Prime milling, 2s 2d to 2s 2£d; good to best feed, 2s Id to 2s 2d ; . inferior to medium, Is 9d to 2s per bushel (sacks extra}. Wheat.— The market is quiet, and values for milling, qualities arc unchanged. Millers are only operating Tin -prime quality, of which there is little offering locally. Medium . sorts are still- neglected. Fowl wheatis "scarce, and with good local inquiry has advanced id to Id per bushel. Quotations : Prime milling, 3s 4d to 3s- sd; medium to good, 3s 2£d to 3s 3£d ;
whole fowl wheat,' 3s to 3s 2d ; broken, and -damaged, 2s 9d to_ 3s per bushel (sacks extra). Potatoes.— We ottered a few lots of locally-grown early sorts ' and Australian white and red potatoes. For the former, there " was fair 1 competition at £'6 10s 'to £8 ' 10s ..per ton, while' Australian consignments realised £4 to £b 10s pei ton (sacks included,, according to quality). ' " _ • Chaff. — The market" is bare as regards prime oaten sheaf, -.and any consignments coming- forward are sure of satisfactory sale on arrival.
