ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON
(From our. own correspondent.) . September 2. His Grace the Archbishop returned to the city on Friday evening. He is to open the new church at Island Bay on Sunday afternoon. ( The Hibernians held their annual' social in - the Druids' Hall on Wednesday evening. About 300 persons were present, and the arrangements left nothing to be desired. The secretarial duties were discharged by Mr A. T. Levin. Several enjoyable vocal items were ren- - dered during the evening. The proposed Catholic hall bids fair to become ■-*. reality very soon. I learn, that three gentlemen have undertaken* to-jgjive £500 each, provided a further sum of £1500 is subscribed by. the parishioners. It is expected that this sum will be realised by gifts from other wealthy people. Considering the success that the appeal for funds has -met with so far, it is v onlyfittinc * that the general body of Catholics should do their share, and by subscribing liberally a further sum enable the committee to undertake the- erection -of a buildine worthy of the object. , B
The members of the Catholic Young Men's Tennis Club held their annual social gathering in the Alexandra Hall on Wednesday "evening". There -was a. good attendance, and a most enjoyable^ evening was spent. The -arrangements were carried out by Misses A. Williams and~M. Meston, and Messrs. J, Moran and B. J. Devine. The committee of .the- farewell concert tendered to JYliss Liliafti Irvine, one of our convent's most 'promising pupils, assembled at the Mayor's room in the Town Hall last evening. The Mayoress (Mrs. T. Hislop) handed to Miss Irvine a cheque for £68 14s 3d, being) the net result of the concert given last week to aid the young singer to prosecute her musical studies abroad. Mrs. Hislop, on to^half of "the committee, wished Miss .Irvine every success in her efforts to reach a higher place in the'profession she has * ..chosen. The Rev. Father Moloney thanked all those who had so generously given -their services towards making the concert so" successful. He was sure that Miss Irvine would carry.- with "her the most kindly memories of the warm interest ' taken • in her .welfare by the people of Wellington.- Miss Irvine, with her mother, leaves for Sydney this afternoon. Shewill remain there for . some time under • the Vbfcst teachers, and will then' leave for Europe to avail herself of- the greater .opportunities afforded there for the further prosecution- of her studies." - - *»
mester an Irish jig. Great praise* is due to the excellent committee, and more particularly to Mr. Neagle, the secretary, for the very able manner in which they conducted the social. It is expected that a profit of about £25 will be the result of the entertainment'financially.
