SILENCING AN OPPONENT
At an election meeting lecently the candidate was somewhat troubled by a man in the audience, who at length became ofiensivcjy personal. ' Is it true that youi mother washes—' he began ■ but before he could add the word ' clothes ' the witty candidate called out smartly : 'Of course she does • why don't you ? ' ' This raised a loud laugh at the disturber's expensebut, still undaunted, he returned to the attack. ' ' You can't deny/ he said, ' that your father was a rag-and-bone man. I bought some old clothes off him thirty years ago.' ' And I see you're still wearing them ! ' was the candidate's lightning retort.
