A good deal of interest was created in Oamaru on. Saturday by the publication of the fact that a deposit of marble had been fojnd in the Gtepopo Hills. It appears that a contractor who was in need of slate for the roof of St. Luke's (. huroh, about a fortnight ago visited the locality of the old slate qiuarries, near Otepopo, and while fossicking came iij on the deposit. He scoured - samples and forwarded them to Christchurch, where they 1 av,e been pronounced by experts to be superior to the celebrated Carrara roarbl'* of Italy, and probably only excelled by tint found in the United States. The extent of the deposit has jet to be ■ determined, but if it is of any extent it will be of considerable value, and is likely to gne employment to a -number of men. In fact, its development would, be a valuable industry. The exact locality is not disclosed by the fortunate finder, but is somewhere in the \i'jinily of ihc slate qtaarries, and may easily be worked, being only lightly covered with turf.
