(Prom an occasional correspondent.) The opening ol St. Mary's Catholic Club .took place in the Assembly Rooms on Apul 24, when there weie about 110 members and intending members present. Ihe function took the sha,pe of a f-iinoke concert. The Very Rev. Dean Grogan presided, ha\ ing on his right the club's chaplain (the liev. Father Mahony) and on his left the president of Hie club (Mr. J. R. Hunt). In the opening address the president stated that the dub had leased a room in the Avenue above Williams and Harper's auction roon s, and as it was centrally situatcd ( it was hoped that ah Catholic young men would become members. The subscription is fixed at 5s for active, and 10s Cor honorary members. Tha following oiLcers haAC been elected : — Patron, Very Rev. Dean Giogan ; spintual director, Rev. Father Mahony ; president, Mr. J. R. Hamt ; vice-presidents, Messrs. M. Dennehy, P.,,8. Lomax, J. J. O'Shea, C. Massey, P. Mcßroarty ; hen. secretary, Mr. 11. Trigger ; hon. treasurer, Mr. P. F. Thorpy ; librarian, Mr. M. Loftus ; custodian, Mr. E. de Rungs ; executive, Messrs. E. McDonald, J. Mcßrearty, T. Mahoney, and W. McTubbs. The following contributed items to the programme : Messrs. P. B. Lomax, Whiteford, B. Willis, W. N. Willia, E. Loftus, P. Thorpy, Tbos. Souter, Rev. Father Mahony, Geo. McCulLoch, Whiteford, Very Rev. Dean Grogan, H. Trigger, Russell. The Very Rev. Dean Grogan gave an interesting address to those present, advising all to become members, stating that it would he "better if the ..young men of to-day devoted more time to clufca like these than to standing arotuid street corners. He also dwelt on the advantages of what could be gained by the men both spiritually and bodily in such associations. The Rev. Father Mshony addressed the members at some length on the benefits derived from those organisations. He instanced the case of Messrs. Fitzgibbon and Kellyi, the two representatives of the Victoiia College, Wellington, who carried off the highest honors in the recent University debating contest. The*e two young men were members of the Wellington Catholic Young Men's Society, and who could tell that there are not more debaters in Wannranui that want bringing out ? Tbe ladies, undor the suoerintP'ndence of Mrs. Hunt, provided the refreshments, frr which a special vote 'of thanks was passed.
