Sports and Concert at Lawrence
The Lawrence St. Patrick's Society held their annual sports meeting on the Glasgow Park on Wednesday afternoon oi last ween. Jhe weather was beautilully line. The attendance u.h not .so large t i.s usual, tins being due no doubt to the fact that neatly all the country 1 people wore taking advantage of Uie line weather to harvest their crops. 'lheie weie evcellcnt entries, and the various event*, were keenly contested r l he handicappers for the running and cycling events (Messib. 11. Hart and A. 31 Lyes) arc. to be congratulated on the success of their work. '1 hey (says the ' Tuapeka Tunes') appear to have accuiately gauged the nieins of the coinpelitois, and the lcsult was a senes oi a>> close and exciting hnishe.s as ha\e been -witnessed in Lawrence tor some time. Messrs. Christie and Kcilehei, the handicappers ol the ung events, were also veiy suclcsslul in their adjustments, veiy little separating the stone and hammer throwers at the close of these contests. All the other ollicials vvoiked assiduously to make the meeting as successful and ciijojable. to the spectatoes as possible. The Tuapeka Hia.^s Band discouised an excellent programme of music dining the afternoon, which added greatly to the enjoyment of those picscnt. In the evening the annual concert m connection w ith St. Patrick's Day toow place m the Town Hall Tliu musical programme submitted was an excellent one, and the unanimous opinion of <>11 who weie present was that it was one of the best conceits vet held m Lawicnce Mr. Wright was the fust vocalist on the piogramme, singing m his .usual line style ' The song the anvil sings.' Miss Frasei followed with ' Rory darhn',' which she sang with much feeling and taste, and had to respond to an encore Mr Coingan nave a capital rendering of 'The better land' (encore 'Oil' to Philadelphia'). Mrs Delany was heard to advantage in ' Dermot Asthorc,' and in response to an encore '-ang ' Doreen ' in an equally pleasing manner Mr. A. Campbell was very successful m his song, ' Mona,' and m response to a recall sang ' Kileen Alannah ' Miss .Jean Dunsmuir (Dunedin) sang ' The dear little shamrock ' in a sympathetic .and finished manner, fairly delighting Ihe audience. In response to an undeniable demand for ' more ' she gave the ever popular Scotch song ' Comin 1 thro' the rye.' Mr. Rvison's two droll recitations, though spoken over-fast, added an agreeable variety to the progiamme. The orchestra opened the second part' of the programme with a selection, which was played in their usual capable manner. Mr Corrigan's number in the second part was well sung. Mrs. Delanv pleased the audience with her nice, sympathetic rendering of the popular song, 'Daddy.' Mr. Campbell gave a fine rendering of the ever pomilar Irish song, ' Killarney ' Miss Dunsmuir sang the difficult song ' Angus M'Donald.' She was accorded a double recall. Mr. Evison airain delie-hted the audience wiih two comic recitations. Miss Fraser was very successful in ' Call me back,' which was sung with exquisite taste, nnd was much appreciated by the audience. Mr. Wrieht brourht what was a most enjoyable concert to a close with another oE his fine nautical songs ' Out where the breakers roar,' (encored). The accompaniments were tastefully played by Miss Jessie Hay. At the conclusion of the programme the Very Rev. Mgr. O'Learv thanked all who had contributed to the srecess of the ernrct, especially inentioninn; Miss Frase r , who had pi need her services at their disposal at a moment's notice.
