Wellington, M.irch 12th. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from th.i High Commissioner, dated London, March 10 :—": — " The market for mutton is firmer, and the demand for stocks light, especially light-weights, which are getting very scarce. Average price for Canterbury mutton to-day, 4Jd per lb. North Inland brands are qnoted at 4£d ; ewes, 3d. The average price of Canterbury lamb is s£d ; brands other than Canterbury, 5Jd. The beef market is dull. Hiver Plate supplies are heavy. Average price, Hindquarters, 3f d ; forequarters (nominal), 2§ 1. Butter : 'Jhe market is rather unsettled, on account of large shipments arriving from Australia. Very inferior quality, for which some holders are forcing sales, is general, and there is an active demand for best quality only. Average price : Choice New Zealand butter, 105 a; Australian, 101s; Argentine, 104 a; Danish, 115-) per cwt. Cheese : The market is firm, and there is a good demand for small white at 62a and for coloured at 64s per cwt Tne hemp market is quiet, but holders ara firm, especially for spot lines. Stocks on hand are 542 tonp, against 974 tons for the corresponding period of last year. Average price for g.f .a q, Wellington, on spot to-day, is £>3 per ton ; average price of ' fair ' current Manila, on spot today, is £41 10s.
Potatoes. — Supplies have fallen off somewhat, and prises for good sorts show a rise. Quotations : Prime lots, £9 to £9 10d ; other sorts, £7 to £8 10a per ton. - . Chuff — The market is fairly well supplied, and prices are as follows : Prime oaten sheaf, £3 10s to £3 154 ; medium to good, £3 to £3 7d 6d per ton.
Messrs Nimmo and Plair report as follows :—: — Oats. — Very« few sales are going through, and prio s are if anyhing a little easier i-ince onr last report. We quote prime milling, Is ll£l to 2j ; good to best feed, Is lOd to Is lid per bushel. Wh^at — Values remain unchanged. A few samples of northern new seven's whe t have rea-hed this market, and millers do not feel disposed to do business unless at a substantial reduction in values ruling for old wheat. We quote : Prime milling old wheat, 38 4-1 to 3s 4J<^ ; medium to good, 3s 3i to 3s id ; whole fowl whea f , 3s Id to 3a 2d ; broken and damaged, 2a 6d U> 3s per bushel (sacks extra). Chaff. — Supplies are onming forward sufficient to fill the immediate demand. We quote : Prime well-cut oaten sheaf, from £3 12s 6d to £3 15s ; medium, £3 5s to £3 10s per ton (.sacks extra"). P )tato°B. — This market has been only moderately supplied for some days past, and to-day values are considerably in advance of tf'ose ruling at the beginning of la?t week. We quote : Prime potatoes, from £9 to £9 IOi ; medium, £8 to £8 15b; Btale and other sorts, £6 to £7 10a per ton. Fggs. — Scarce and in firm demand at Is 3d per dozen. Pi ffß — Bacocers, 3£d to 3fd ; overweights, 2Ji to 3d ; porkers, 3Jd p»r lb P ultry. — Hens. 2* to 2s 61 ; cockerels, 3i to 4s 61 ; duckp, 3a to 3s 6d per pair. Turkeys — Hen«, 5d ; gobblers, 7d (live weight). Butter. — Gocd demand. Dairy, 7d ; milled, 8d to BJI ; separator, BJI to 91.
