' Bible '-in-Schools
' There are,' said the Rev. P. B. Fraser at the Presbyterian Assembly in Auckland on Tuesday, ' 1076 verses in Matthew, but in the (Bible-in-schools) text-book there are only 136 verses in it, while 600 verses of the Gospels have been struck out altogether. There are only 11 chapters of Matthew which have not been mutilated. To satisfy the Jewish section of the community, all references to the coming of Christ have been struck out with' the rigor of a Russian censor.' Here is another titbit from the debate. The Rev. Dr. Gibb (chairman of the miscalled ' Bible '-in-schools ' Referendum ' League) loquitur : ' If the Bible is to be introduced into the schools, I would have the whole of New Zealand against me ! ' Dr. Gibb and his friends do not want ' the Bible ' in the State schools, but their own ' emasculated caricature ' of the Protestant version of the Bible— which is quite a different thing.
