We understand that a very -successful Catholic concert was given in Palmerston South on Monday evening. His Lordship Bishop Verdqn will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Patrick's Basilica, South Dunedin, on Si/nday afternoon. A mission will be opened on next Sunday in the Sacred Heart Church, North-East Valley, 'by Wie Rev. Father Claftey, S.J. A meeting of the ladies interested in the forthcoming Fa>ncy Fair will be held in St. Joseph's Hall this (Thursday) evening. The session of the St. J.o,sepih's Men's Club will be opened in St. Joseph's Hall on Friday evening, when the Rev. Father Murphy, Adm., will deliver the, presidential address. A mission, to be conducted by the Rev. Father Morrogh, S.J-, will be opened at Allanton on Sunday next. The Rev. Father will afterwards give a retreat to tjhe students of Holy Cross College. The Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor at An'derson's Bay was visited by a large number of citizens from the city and suburbs on Easter Monday. The visitors weTe shown over the home and grounds by the Rev. Mother. There are now twelve inmates in the horne — eight men and four women— under the care of the good Sisters. The handsome new church in Invercargill is fast appnoachihg completion, and it is now the most ornamental and conspicuous land-n*ark in and about the Southland capital. The new church, whicri will have seating accommodation for aboiit 1100 persons, is in the neo -'Byzantine style of architecture, the size of the edifice and novelty of style excitijis^ the f&dmJir'atiton of all w,hp have seen~ ift. The ceremony of blessing, opening, and dedicating it to the service of God will he performed on Sunday, May 7, and preparations are in rapid progress to make Ihe occasion a red-letler day in the history of the Catholic Church in the southern province. . No fewer than three Prelates will grfcce thei occasion by their presence— the Most Rev. Dr. Redwoo'l, tjhe Right Rev. Dr. Grimes, and the Right Rev. the Bishop of Duheflil&l T.he IVfbst Rev. Dr. Redwood will preach at the solemn Mass of dedication, and the Rigjht Rev. Dr. Grimes in the evening. The Rev. Fathet Brown, S.J., opened a mission in Ri,vex?ton on. We|dnes|day evening of tfliis week. c A euchxe party, in aid of the funds of the St. Yin. cent 'de P^iul Society, will be held in St. Joseph's Hall on Mdlnday evening. The chlaritable work pei formed by the Society should merit for it the generous support of all. On Ei'astter Sunday at St. Patrick's Basilica, South Dujnedtti, a Missa Cantata was celebrated by the Rev. Father Corcoran at 11 o'clock, and the Rev. Father Ciaftey, S.J., preached an impressive sermon. In tiie evening the misksfon, conducted by the Josiuit Fatheig, was brought to a el'ose with a sermon by the Rev. Fa.tfater Br.own, S.J., renewal of Baptismal vjows, the Papal blessiiyng, and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Tne attendance throughout Ihe course of the mission was 1 very good, especially at the evening devotions. On Efaster Sunday evening the church was crowded. Mj*. P. O'Neill, Dunedin, received a cable messjage from Rome on Sundiay to the effect that his sen, Rev. D. A. O'Neill, who had been studying at the Irish I'olleg«, had been ordained to the priesthood on H v oly Saturday. Rev. Father O'Neill received his early education at the Christian Brothers' Sqhool, Dunedin, and from fhere proceeded to the Ecclesiastical Seminary, Manly, where he, niursmed his studies for about three antd a half years, l«av*ing for Rome about four yeais ago. lie is to retmain in the Etertial City until ajbout June 1, wbehi he will proceed t o Ireland for a brief visit, after which he will leave for New Zealand. Th a'idjditioTi tb the early Masses on Eiasiter Sunday, Pontifical High Mass was celebrated at 11 o'clock at St. Joseph's Cathedral by his Lordslhip the Bishop, Rev. Fatiher Morrogtii S.J., being assistant priest, Rev. Father Heath deacon, Rev. Fialiher O'Maliey s-übdaacon, and Rev. Fatiher Marphy, Adm., master of ceremonies. The Rev. Father Murphy preached on the Resutrection. The miusic of the Mass was Gounod's ' Messe Solennelle,' tihe principal soloists being Miss Pound, Messrs. Carolim, McGrath, and Hiissey. Mr. O. Feil conaucted, and Mr. A. Vallis presideld at ttheorg;an. The decorations, whicii were confined to the high altar, were effective and in excellent taste. In the evening the mission was brought to a close, wihen t<hc Rev. Father Morrogh, S.J., preached. After the sermon there was Consecration to the Sacred Heart, followed by the Papal blessing and Benediction of the BlesSed Sacrametnt. At Vespers Mi^s H. Sweeney sanjsj an ' Aye Maria ' by Teresa Del Riego. After High Mass his Lordship the Bishop entertained the choir in St. Joseph's Hall, ajrd complimented the members an tke admirable manner in which they had rendered the music of the Mass. There were large congregations bbtlfi. morning and eveaiing, and large numftoers approached the Holy Table at the eaily Masses. The mission at St. Joseph's Cathedral was qontinued during the week by the Rev. Father Morrogh, S.J., the Masses and evening devotions being well attended. His Lordship the Bishop was cele-hrant of the Mass on Holy Thursday, Rev. Father Lynch (Palmerston) and Rev. Father O'Neill (Invercargill) being deacons at the throne, Very Rev. Mgr. O'Leary (Lawrence) assistant priest, Rev. Father Liston (lTol] r Cross College) detacon of the Mass, Rev. Father O'Maliey sUb)teacion, and Rev. Father Murphy, Adm., master of ceremonies. The music of the Mass was beautifully renldelred by the choir of the Domifciclan nuns. On Cond Friday Mass was celebrated by his Lordship the Bishop, Rev. Flather Murphy being deacon, Re/. Fatner O'Mallev subdeacon, and R>ev. Father L^n-h assistant priest. The Passion was sung by the Very Rev. Mgr. O'Leary, Rev. Father Cleary, and Rev. Fatiher Listion, the solemn music being rendered by the students of Holy Cross College. Rev. Father Cleary was. celebr&nt on Holy Saturday, Rev. Fat/her Liston being deacon, Rev. Faither O'Mftlliey subdeacon, and Rev. Father Murphy master of ceremonies. Among tftie priests p'resejut in the sanctuary Id'uting Holy Week ceremonies were the Very Rev. Father O'Neill (Milton), Rev. Fathers C'offey and Corcoran (South Duhedin), Rev. Fattier Howard (Port Chalmers), Rev. Father McGratlh, and Rev, Father Heath (Bathunst). The sermon on Holy Thursday on the Blessed Eucharist and thatoii Good Friday onjthe Passion were preached by the Rev. Father Morrogh, S.J.
