ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON

(Fr"om dur own correspondent.) January 21. A large number of the clergy and laity here intend visiting Christohurch in connection with the opening of the new Cathgdrai. Members of the clergy and laity will meet the visiting Australian prelates at Wanganui about February 8 and acctomppjiy them to Wellington, where they are to be entertained in a fitting manner. A meeting of the Wellington Routh Hibernian Society was held on Wednesday evening, when one member wias initiated, and a candidate proposed. A lecture on Jaipan, prepared by the Rev. Father Goggan, was read by; tihe secretary. In order to pio\ide funds for the furnishing of their stall at the forthcoming bazaar the ladies of Wellington Soutih are holding an 'At Home ' in the schoolr/oom, Green street, on Wednesday evening next. A capital concert programme has been arranged, and a« enjoyable evening may be expected. A largely attended meeting was held in St. Patriok'B Hall, Bo*ulcott street, on Tuesday evening to consider the question of arranging a reception to his Grace Archbishop. Redwood, Vvho is expected to return to Wellington Uv March next. It was unanimously decided that an address of welcome and a ourse of sovereigns slhould be presented to his Grace, and that the ceremony take place at tthe Hibernian Society's concert to be held in the Town Hall on St. Patrick's night. An influential committee of fifteen was appointed, comprising fuve representatives from each of the three city parishes—Thorndon, Te Aro, and Wellington Soutih. Mr. Martin Kennedy is chairman of the committee, Mr. Aloysius Macd^oinal'd treasurer, a vnd Mr. Albert H- Casey secretary. Of fourteen tenders sent in for the erection of the Sacred Heart Convent at Island Ray, that of Mr. H. Hanson 'has been accepted. The cost of the work will be about £15,000. The new convent will be in four .storeys ot brick, lOOlt square, with an elevation of 72tt. The basement will comprise the school refectory, a community refectory, a room for the Sisters, three parlors, and a kitchen and scullery.' On the ground floor will be three cla^s-rooms, a recreation room, study room, five piano rooms, and music lobby, and also a chapel. On the first floor will be the dormitories as well as the rooms for the members of the Order. The rooms lare to be Hit high, and the building will be provided with the most modern and up-to-date means of ventilation, etc. The grounds will comprise about six acres. Mr. J. S. Swan is t»he architect for the buildin*. Mr. John CJ-uthrie, contractor of Berhampore, has in" hand the work of excavating for the foundations.
