DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

Master Francis Shepiieid of the Marist Brothers' School (writes an Invercargill correspondent) gained an unusual distinction in this year's Australian Copy Booft writing competition, being awarded the s'pectd gold medal givdn for competition in this Colony. Master Shepherd is ston of Mr. ,J. Shepherd, of ths Railway Department, and is only nine years of age, and as the competitors were hot restricted by an age limit his success is all the more noteworthy.

A very successful bazaar in connection witb the CatfioUc church was held at Cromwell on December 26 an)d 27. There was a very fine exhibition of works of art, for many of which the Rev. Father Ryan and tihe dommittee have to thank kind and generous friends in Dunedin, Mosgiel, Milton, Oamaru, Invercargill and Lawrence. The weather was very vnpro|)itiout., still the attendance was very good, and the takings excellent, thanks to the zeal and energy of the stall-holders and their assistants. A sum of £178 was taken on the tw,o evenings.

A vary enjoyable social gathering (says the ' Lake W,ajkatip Mail ') was held in St. Joseph's schoolroom on

Ifcursday evening, January 12, as a wind-up to ohe of tine miQs<t successful bazaars that has ever been held in the district. The Rev. Father O'Donnell presided and warmly commended all stall-holders, attendants and all who had anything to do with the bazaar for the upity winch prevailed, and for the zealous manner in which they all worked to make the affair the success that it undoubtedly was. The evening was pleasantly filled in wit/h speeches, music (vocal and instrumental) recitations, etc. There were nearly a hundred persons present. '
