' Freehold v. leasehold ' was the subject of discussion by the members of the Cat/holic Literary Society on Monday evening.
On Monday evening a card and draughts tournament was played between tihe St. Aloysius' branch of the H.A.C.B. Society and the NewtowSi Oddfellows at the latter's clu<b rooms. The Hibernians were acctortled a hearty welcome. After many closely contested games tjhe ttournameftit ended in favor of the H.A.C.B. Society by 21 points to 19. It is t/he intention of the Hibernians to give a return tournam i e<nt at a,n early date. Refreshments were provided and friendly wishes exchanged by the respective officers on behalf of the members of both societies.
A very pleasant ' at home ' was given by the ladies of Wellington South on Wednesday evening in the sctoool rooms, Green street. The attendance was larg,e. The arrangements, which were made entirely by the ladiesv were very elaborate. One of the rooms was handsomely furnished as a drawing room. The parish f,unjdis should receive a substantial increase from the result.
The annual supper of the Catholic Young Men's Club was held on Thur'sttay evening in St. Patrick's Hall. Yen. Archdeacon Devoy presided. There was an excellent attendance of members. The following toast list was honored :— ' Tlhe Pope and King,' by the Yen. chairman'; tihe" ' Vice-«p;residents,' by "Mr. A. H. Casey, responded to by Yen. Arch/deacon Devoy, and Messrs. J. J. OaUaghan and L. Dwan ; the ' Catholic Young Men's Clu.b,,' by Mr. J. J. Callaghan, responded to by the secretary (Mr. McKeowen) ; the ' N.Z. Federation,' proposed by Mr. C. Foley, responded to by the president (Mr. E. Fit'/.gibbon) and Mr. McGowan ; the ' Literary Society,' by Mr. P. J. Moran, responded to by the president (Rev.
