PETONE.

After Vespers on Sunday evening Rev. Father Maples dedicated the sanctuary lamp, candelabra, vestments, and other articles which were piescnted to him on his feast day, to the service of the Church of the Sacred Heart, Petonc. The ceiemony was \ery solemn and impresisive, and Fatjier Maples spoke in "a very touching manner. The massive lamp is a great ornament t>o the (hurch, and alone; with the iest of the articles is much admired. They arc splendid specimens ot Italian art, and come from Rome.
A pleasant ceremony took place on Tuesday night, when the Rev. Father .Maples, on behalf of the membeis of the choir and other friends, presented Mr. Oswald Avi^on with a handsome silver-mounted baton, suitably inscribed, a cassock and cotta, and some musie| in recognition of his sen ices as voluntary choirmaster of the Chuich of the Sacred Heart. The Rev. Father leferred to Mr. Avison's untiring /.eal and ability and his unselfish sacnlice in guing up so much of his time to the good work. Dunne; the evening a musical progianime was gone- through, items being contributed by Mrs. Tavlor, Misses (iray (2), Taylor (2), amd Messrs Taylor, Avison, Ryan, and Dunne. An enjoyable evening was terminated by pai taking of refreshments. The baton was of ebony mounted with richly chased and engraved silver bands and was piocuied from the eminent linn of Messrs. Bcgg airtl Co , oi Wellington and Dunedin.
