INTERCOLONIAL

The second Australian Catholic Congress will be held in the Cathedral Hall, Fitzroy, from the 23rd to the 30th ;October, 1904, A people's welcome of the most enthusiastic kind was recently accorded at Launceston to those who had been cngagjEd in fighting the recent smallpox epidemic. Among thtose honored and .presented with an address were Father O'Mahony, editor of the Tasmanian • Monitor,' the Rev. F. A. Fernau (Anglican), the hospital staff nurses, and others. Father O'Ma<hon.y, in an elojqjuent reply, stated that it was 24 years thjat day since he had been ordained a priest. The contract has been let for the erection of the first portion of the Orphanage which is to be conducted by the Good Shepherd Nuns in Bendigo, Victoria. The cost of the work to bje undertaken ait present will exceed £13,000. The building will be a three-storied one with a frontage of 150 feet. The building will be in every respect up-to-date and, admirably suited for! its purpose. The site. is about the finest around Bendigo. It stands on a fine elevation commanding a splendid view of the city, and has an unfailing water-supply and ample gardens, etc. The purchase of the property was completed in January of the present year. We greatly regret to announce the -death of the Rev. J. J. Cahill, pastor of Brewarrina, diocese of Wilcannia, New South Wales. He died of hemorrhage of the lungs on December 10 at Orange, N.S.W., whither he had toeen moved on account of the heat. His brother, Rev. W. F. Cahill, of Goulburn, arid his sister, Sister M. Gertrude, of Oobar, were present with him during his last illness. He was interred in the Catholic cemetery at Oranjge, the last solemn rites b(eing performed at the gravesilde by his brother, Rlev. W. F. Cahill. The laitte Father Cahill completed his ecclesiastical studies in Propaganda College, Rome, and was only thirty years of age at tihe time of his lamented) death. He was an exemplary and zealous priest, exceeditigly popular in the diocese of Wilcannia, and his early death deprives the diocese of one of its abflest and most promising men. The deceased priest was a bjrother of the popular pastor of Carterton, New Zealand, and paid a visit to this Colony last February.— R.l. P. The Catholic church and presbytery, Cue (Western Australia) were burned to the ground a few weeks ago. The fire origihated in the little presbjytery by the strong wind causing the lamp to flare and catch on a cushion near. As the presbytery was within a few feet of the church it was only the work of a few seconds Isfcfore the flames reached the timbers of the church. The Fire Brigade were on the spot without delay, but it was seen the church couPd not be saved, so they turned all their energies to save the Dominican convent (founded from Dunedin a few years ago). It was a hard figiht, but their energy and determination won the battle. The brigade were assisted by mafty willing hands. His Lordship Dr. Kelly, who is on a visit to Murchison, .lost his cro7ier and episcopal robfes. Father Creagii lost everything. From the church were saved the chalice, organ, and most of the sacred vestments. The boarders, when it was seen the convent was in danger, were taken charge of by many friends and safely housed for the night. Loss about £800. Insurance, £350.
