S. H. College, Auckland

December 17. The entertainment at the break-up of the Sacred Heart College last evening received dn all hands the most unstinted praise. A varied and first-class programme was given by the students, consisting of the following items, which were rendered m capital style : Overture (college orchestra) ; chorus by students ; a fine exhibition of physical drill ; siong, J. Quinlan ;, a clever and amusing parliamentary election, with very good local ' hits ' ; chorus; recitation (• Fontenoy '), S. Dempsey ; duet, J. FitzgerallT and G. Fraser ; instrumental trio, J. Higgins (piano), P. Amodeo (flute), M. O'Brien (yiolin) ; song ; and a French scene from ' l'Avare ' in which ttie actors were E. Goldenstedt and P. Amodeo. At the conclusion of the performance the Bishop complimented the boys, and thanked the Mayor for his presence. The Mayor, who was received with great applause, congratulated the hoys who took part in the programme. He was greaitly pleased to see such a manly tone existing among the boys. The Hon. W. Beehan proposed a vote of thanks to his Worship, which was carried with acclamation. Before tine Mayor districted the prizes, the director (Brother Basil) read a repoTt of > the- work dq,ne during the half-year. During the six months they had been resident there the day boys had double*!, and the boarders had trebled their numbers. In building the college they had no other end in' view than to afford Catholic Hoys a means of acquiring an intermediate education equal io that supplied by the secondary schools of the Colony, and at the same time place at their disposal an opportunity of obtaining a sound religious training.
