DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN
There was a crowded congregation at the 11 o'clock Mp/ss at St. Joseph's Ca'tluedral on Sunday, when the Right Rev Mgr. Count Vay de Vaya preached. On Monday the Monsignor left for Queenstown and the cold lakes district. He will deliver an illustrated travellecture in St. Joseph's Hall on Wednesday evening. Among the clergy present at the ceremonies in connection with the completion of Blairs College, Scotland, on September 23, was the Right Rev. Mgr. Mackay, of Oamaru. The dramatic class in connection with St. Joseph's Ladies' Club gave a very successful presentation of the operetta, ' A Dress Rehearsal,' in the Foresters' Hall,
Port Chalmers, on Friday evening, the performance being in aid of, the local convent building fund. The principal solos were capitally rendered by Misses Poppelwell, Staunton, Davis, Hannigan, O'Grady, and Trestion. The minor parts wore nicely performed by the Misses Clancy, Treston, Hanrahan, and others. Refreshments were kindly provided by the Port ladies.
The Very Rev. Dean Light'heart, Superior of the Maori mission, preached in tine Church of the Immaculate Conception, Milton, on Sunday week. He celebrated the 11 o'clock Mass at St. Patrick's Basilica, South Dunedin, on last Sunday, and preached in the evening to a crowded congregation, who were greatly interested in his account of the Maori mission. On the following two days he addressed the school children, and gave a very interesting account of native life and customs, his remarks being greatly enjoyed by the youngsters. The Dean is now on his way north artd expects to reach Rotorua in about a fortnight. He desires through the medium of our columns to express his heartfelt thanks to the hierarchy and clergy, the religious communities, and the laity of New Zealand for the generous support which they have extended to his work among the Maori popuJation of the diocese of Auckland.
