(From ou* own correspondent.)
June 25.
Rev. Father Rouillac, who, it will be remembered navigated the mission yacht Eclipse from the Islands to Sydney, is at present in Auckland, and is the guest of Vie Bishop. He intends to purchase an oil engine to place in his vessel.
Rev. Father Furlong, of Sfe Benedict's, officiated last Sunday at Waihi so as to enable the Rev. Father Brodde to, come to town to take part in the opening of the new Sacred Heart College. A. few weeks ago I referred to an individual who had insulted Bishop Lenihan by placing in his shop window a card charging Dr. .Lenihan with idolatry, and which had reference to his Lordship blessing a statue of otar Blessed Lady at St. Benedict's. His insults have gone on until at last his shop window has been stove in and angry crowds have gathered round it, and the police fearing bad work, charged him before the S.M Mr' Brabant, with conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, etc. He was bound over in two securities of £50 to keep the peace for six months Mr. William Beehan, District President of the H.A.C.B. Society, has been called to the Legislative Council The Hon William Beehan, M.L.C., has been the recipient of numerous congratulations, from all parts of the Colony upon the distinction so well earned.' by him. It is natural for an Irishman to be a democrat The misgovernment of his own land is wholly responsible for this, and the new Legislative Councillor under notice possesses a plenary store of the democratic spirit which caused him to identify himself locally with the Liberal party in every light which it waged for the benefit of the masses. In matters Catholic he has been always prominent, and as a member of the church committee of St Benedict's parish he has been invaluable As a Hibernian since the starting of the Society in thi9 Colony he has worked lonp and assiduously for its advancement, as well as furthering the interests of Ireland when monetary aid was requisite to carry on the fight at Home. He was born in Kerry in 1853, and came to Auckland in 1874, when the gold fever at the Thames attracted him thither. Subsequently he came back to the city, where he was employed in several drapery establishments, and Inter on started in business for himself, but 10 years ago he sold out to the D.S.C., and for seven years he was employed by that firm, after severing his connection with which he again started in business, which he now carries on. His brother Hibernians and numerous friends will feel proud of Mr. Beehan's appointment.
