Dr. Hall, who returned recently to New Zealand, has now taken up his duties as senior house surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital. Mrs. D. L. Poppelwell, who has acted for a number of years as organist of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Gore, having relinquished that position, was presented by the panshioneis with a handsome hall stand in appreciation of her services.
lhu lvight Rev. Algr. Mackay, who left Auckland by the Moura, lor Suva to join the Moana for Vancouver, v.riting lrom the Litter port under date May 24, says that the voyage so far has been very pleasant, the weather being exceptionally fine. In order to collect the' balance of the amount expended on strengthening the foundations of St. Joseph's Cathedral, it has been decided to inaugurate a weekly collection, and to make it more effective to divide the parish into twelve districts, with a staff of collectors to each district. A meeting of parishioners will be held in St. Joseph's Hall on Sunday evening, when the proposal will be submitted for their approval. The new Catholic Church of St. Thomas, Garston, was blessed and opened on Sunday. The Rev. Father O Donnell, pastor of the district, was present, and the occasional sermon was preached by the Rev. Father Murphy Adm , St. Joseph's Cathedral, Dunedin, who spoke ot the sanctity of the Church, and gave an interesting and detailed explanation of the ceremony of dedication. On Saturday the employees of Messrs. Herbert, Huynes, anu v^o., met to say farewell to Mr. Charles Columb, junr., u>.o, after 16 years' connection with the lii-iu^ was leaving to take up the management of the 'N Z. Tablet ' Printing and Publishing Company. Mr. Columb was the recipient of a dressing-case as a token of the esteem in which he was held, and many good wishes were expressed for his future success. Mr. Columb replied in a brief and appropriate speech. St. Joseph's Men's Club held their first debate on Friday evening, the subject being ' Should bachelors be taxed 9 ' The .attendance was very satisfactory. Mr. I. Carolin led in the affirmative, and Mr. H. Miles took the negative side. These gentlemen showed that they had devoted a great amount of time and care to the study ot their arguments Mr. Carolin was supported chiefly by Mr. T. Hussey, and Mr. Miles by Messrs. J. B Callan, junr., and C. Foley. A number of the members having expressed their opinions the chairman put the question to the meeting, when the negative side won by a small majority.
