A well-lnown figure among literary and artistic coteries passed away recently by the decease of John Hungorford Pollen, for many years connected with the South Kensington Museum. Born 82 years ago, Mr Pollen studied painting in Rome, and was afterwards appointed by his friend Cardinal Newman professor of fine arts in the Catholic University of Dublin He built and painted the church in Stephen's Green, and among his other art works were the designs for glass, mosaic, and carvin"in the Oratory, Brompton He enjoyed the friendship of I ore! Ripon (to whom ho had been private secretary) of Thackeray, and of many other, distinguished people The obituniy notices of Mr Hungerford Pollen (whose lamily. by the wav, is one of the oldest in England) omitted to state that ho was in early life a clergyman of the Church of England, and an enthusiastic Tractarian He served as curate at the famous church of St Saviour's, Leeds, which was built and endowed (anonymously) by IV. Pusey Ho withstood the shock, of Newman a accession, but eventually followed Manning over the border, having in the meantime married a daughter of Manning's favorite curate and close friend, Charles Laprmtaudaye Mr Pollen leaves a numerous and distinguished family, several of the sons being in Holy Orders in the Catholic Church.
