DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH.

(From our own correspondent.)

January 12. The Bey. Father Delaney, of Holy Crosi College, Dunedin, has been spending a few days in Christchurch as a guest at the episcopal residenoe. The Very Rev. Father Keogh, S.M., Rector of St. Patrick's College, returned from West land on Saturday last and preached in the Pro-Cathedral on Sunday at Vespers. He returns to Wellington to-day (Monday). A large addition to the Monastery of the Sacred Heart, Barbadoes street, is in course of erection. It is to form the main front entrance to the fine building, and is in completion of the original design so far as this' part of the structure is concerned, At the St. Patrick's Day Celebration Committee meeting held on Sunday his Lordship the Bishop stated that the Sisters of Nazareth recently communicated with him asking that a Bite be procured for the proposed home for the afflicted and needy. It may be reasonably assumed therefore that the establishment of this much-desired institution will speedily be an accomplished fact. A meeting of last year's St Patrick's Day Celebration Committee and others willing to assist in arranging a national celebration of the event this year was held on Sunday afternoon in the parochial library. His Lordship the Bichop presided, and there was a good attendance, including several of the clergy. It was decided that the nature of the celebration ehouH be a oonoert, the proceeds to be devoted, as on the last occasion, to the establishment of a home for the aged and needy. Mr W. Hoban was elected lay chairman of the General Committee, and Mr E. O'Connor secretary. It was resolved to convene a meeting of the ladies' committee. An adjournment was then made till an early date. The annual meeting of the Altar Society of St. Mary's, Manchester street, was held after Vespers on last Sunday week, with a good attendance of members. The Rev. Father Gallais, S.M. (direotor), presided. The principal business transacted was the election of officers and the reading and adoption of the annual report and balance sheet. Mrs J. C. Chase waß elected president, and Miss Dunne and Miss O'Connor vice-presidents. The balance sheet showed that the Society was in a most flourishing and satisfactory state. The total membership of the Society, inoluding the branches attached to St. Joßeph'p, Papanui, aud St. Michael's, Hornby, numbers 70 ladies. The ordinary meetings are held monthly, at w hich eßch rm mber contribntes one shilling. The receipts and disbursements for the period just ended were £65 13a 4d and £01 4s 7d respectively, and the balance in bank £4 8s 9d. The Society has accomplished a large amount of useful and necessary work. The various churches have been enriohed in furniture and objects of devotion to a considerable extent by the ladies' efforts, and all the requ'rements of the sanctuary abundantly supplied. Much of what has been done in the past is of a permanent nature, and the members look forward with confidence to directing their efforts to a still greater extent in the good work they are so devotedly engaged.
