(From our own correspondent.) Deoember 20. Rev. Father Kimbell returned from his Australian trip on Friday. News was received by this week's mail that the Very Rev. Dean Mahoney, of Nelson, was at time of writing very ill in a Dublin hospital. Mr M. J. Crombie has been advised that he has passed tbe barrister's final examination. Mr Crombie is an ex-pupil of St. Patrick's College and his success will be pleasant news to his friends and school-fellows throughout the Colony. On Satnrday last the marriage of Mr Charles Cuming, of the literary staff of the ' New Zealand Times,' to Miss Annie Hunt, formerly of the nursing staff of the Wellington Hospital, took place at St. Joseph's Church. Rev. Father Ainsworth performed the ceremony. Among the presents waß a piece of silver plate from Sir Coming's colleagues of the ' Times.' Three Redemptorist Fathers have arrived in Wellington. Rev. Father O'Farrell (Provincial), who has the reputation of being one of the finest preachers in Australia, is the guest of his Grace the Archbishop, and will preach the retreat to the nuns of St. Mary's Convent beginning on tbe 26th iust. He will also conduot the priests' retreat here. Rev. Fathers O'Donnell and Leo, who left for Nelson and Nap<-r respectively, will be engaged preaching retreats to the Sisters- They will give a mission in the Te Aro parish at the end of January. Ihe marriage of Mias L. Monoghan, youngest daughter of the late Major Monoghan, of Earori, to Mr James Monogban, of Clarevllle, Wairarapa, took place on Wednesday last at the Church of the Sacred Heart. The Very Rev. Father Lewis, V.G., performed the ceremony. The bride was attired in heliotrope Bilk with hat to match, and was attended by her two nieces — Misses Monoghan and Prenderville — who wore grey muslin over pale yellow. Mr J. Prenderville acted as groomsman. The wedding breakfast was served at the residence of the bride's mother, Earori. During the afternoon the bridal party left for their home in Clareville. At the Church of the Sacred Heart on Sunday, December 14, a large number of children received their First Communion. His Giace the Archbishop celebrated the half past seven o'clock Mass and addressed the communicants. The Children of Mary waited on tbe children at the breakfast pr vided by the ladies of the pariah. At the half past 10 o'olock Mass his Grace administered the Sacrament of Confirmation aad also preached. In the evening the renewal of baptismal vows took place, when his Grace again addressed the children. The congregation joined in the singing of the hymn ' Faith of our Fathers.' The children of the Newtown convent pchool were very successful in their cantata 'An Irish May day,' given at the Victoria Hall on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings last. Miss Kathleen Daly took the leading part, and Bang the solos very tastefully. Prominent parts were taken by Misses Barton, O'Connor, Fitzgibbon and Jameson, and all were heaitily applauded. The choruses and glees were excellently (rang, and reflected great credit on their teachers. The annual treat given by Mrs M. Eennedy to the children of St. Joseph's Orphanage took tbe form of a picnic at Day's Bay on Thursday last. The party were conveyed across the harbor in the steamer ' Duchess,' where all kinds of amusements were provided for the children, The Misses Kennedy and Misses O' Connor were most attentive to the ohildren. On their return to town cheers were given for Mrs Eennedy and family.
