DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN.

On Sunday, at St. Joseph's Cathedral, the prayeru of the con* Rregation were asked for the Very Rev. Dean Mahoney, of Nelson, who lies dangerously ill in Dublin. On Sunday there was Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at St. Joseph's Cathedral from last Mass until Vespers. In the evening there waa a procession, in which the children of the parish schoolß and the members of the Saored Heart Society took part. The Very Rev. Father O'Neill (Milton), and the Rev H W Cleary (Editor of the NZ. Tablet) arrived in Melbourne on December 3, by the North German steamer, Barbaroesa. Father O'Neill intended to come on to New Zealand by the first intercolonial steamer. Father Cleary cut short his stay in the Old Land in order to visit his brother. Immediately on his arrival at Adelaide the Rev. Father received telegraphic news of the death of his brother. By a singular coincidence, about the same hour and place 14 years ago he received a telegram announcing the death of a sister whom he was likewise hoping to see before her death. The distribution of prizes to the pupils of the Christian Brothers' school takes place on Thursday evening, the 18th December, in St. Joseph's Hall. His Lordship the Most Rev. Dr. Verdon is announced to preside. As usual, the pupils are providing an excellent entertainment. Included amongst the items we find a parliamentary debate on the momentous question, ' Is it advisable to have lady members of parliament ? ' Doubtless the young parliamentarians will settle the question finally— to their own satisfaction. The ' members ' include six of the successful competitors at the re* cent Dunedin competitions. There are aleo musical and elocutionary items on the programme. On Friday, December 19, the annual entertainment on behalf of that very deserving institution, St. Vincent de Paul's Orphanage, South Danedin, will be given in the Priooess Theatre. The first part of the programme will consist of a conoert, to which the following ladies and gentlemen will contribute items : Misses Bess Blaney, Fraser, and Leonard, Mesdames Todd and Eager and Messrs Eager, Brunsdon, Hall, Wright, Huueey, Anthony, MoLennon. Stewart, Valhs, and Master Colline. The ooncert will be followed

by a oomedy of exceptional merit. It is aafe to assume from the well«known ability of the performers that the entertainment will be the best of its kind Riven here for some time, but apart from this the object for which it is given it one that shouH enlist the sympathy of all who take an interest in the great and good work whioh is being done by the orphanage.
