INTERCOLONIAL.

His Lordship Dr Delaney, Coadjutor-Bishop of Hobart, passed through Sydney the other da*' on his way to West Australia, where he will take an extended holiday. Dr. Delaney has been suffering acutely from insomnia, the result of overwork, and has been ordered a long rest by his medical advisers. His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne has made the following clerical changes in the archdiocese : — Rev. J. P. Carney to St. Francis's ; Rev. H. O'Gradv from St. Francis's to Castlemaine ; Rev. P. Francis, from Castlemaine to Gisborne ; Rev. D. Lawton, from Gisborne to Kilmore ; Rev. J. Byrne, from Geelong to Fleniington ; and Rev. J. Ellis, to Geelong. The foundation stone of the new school at Toowong to be conducted by the Sisters of Mercy was laid on Sunday afternoon, November 2, by bis Grace Archbishop Dunne. There was a large gathering at the ceremony, and the collection taken up was such as to show the earnestness of the people of the district in the grand work of providing Catholic education. Mr. Thomas Dalton (says the Sydney ' Freeman's Journal ') is worthily sustaining family traditions. Like his late father, he takes a deep and practical interest in Church and educational movements, and this he proves more convincingly than if he preached his adherence from the housetops, which he doesn't. During the week, Mr. Dalton made known to Father Gartlan rector of St. Ignatius' College, his intention of establishing at Riverview a £100 scholarship. In a private letter received by Mr Thomas Dalton, of Sydney, from Mr William Redmond, M. P., a few days ago, the latter expressed his intention of naving a private visit to Australia in the early part of next year. The letter was of course written prior to the developments which led to his imprisonment. Mr. Redmond's six months in Kilmainham (says the ' Freeman's Journal ') will carry him well into the middle of the year, and if he visits us then, as it is hoped, Home Rule Australia will no doubt show him that here, as in Ireland, imprisonment in defence of constitutional freedom is glorious. His Eminence Cardinal Moran is expected to reach Sydney on December 6. At a meeting of the priests of the archdiocese held recently it was decided that the clergy should charter a boat and meet his Eminence at the Heads, and also present him with an address at his reception at the Cathedral. A committee, composed of the Very Rev. Dr. Carroll, V.G., Archpriest Sheehy, Right Rev. Monsignor O'Brien, the Very Rev Dean Slattery, Very Rev. Father Lc Rennetel, S M , and the Rev. Father Moynahan, was appointed to draw up the address . The Rev. Father Guillemin, who has been sunplving the place of the Rev. Father Barlow for some months past at Penrith. having been appointed to the position of Superior of the new Maribt house at South Graft on, his place till the return of Father Barlow in about three weeks will be filled by the Very Rev Father Le Rennetel, S.M After his return (.savs the ' Freeman's Journal) it is likely that Father Le Rennetel. whose health is not all that his friends would wish, will doubtless take a six months' tour through New Zealand His Lordship the Bishop of Wilcanma blessed and opened a new church at Nyngan a few Sund.ivs aso The Right Rev. Dr Murray, Bishop of Jvlnitland, and the Right Rev. Dr. Gallagher, Bishop of Goulburn were present at the ceremony, the occasional sermon being preached by Dr Gallagher. The church has accommodation for about 700 people. The Hey. Father Treaey, pastor of Nyngan, read a statement showing that a sum of £1133 had been received towards the building fund. The total cost of the sacred edifice, with fencing- furnishing, etc., was about £1850, leaving a debit balance of about £700. The subscriptions at the cercmon-" amounted to £200. The Very Rev. Father Sebastian Sloan, the new Provincial of the Passionist Order m Australia, has arrived in Sydney. Father Sebastian. m addition to his other duties, becomes Superior of Mary's Mount Retreat, Goulburn The new Provincial is a native of Dunpannon, Ireland, and was lor some years Master of No\ ices at Broadw.T- England, He is accompanied by the Rev. Francis Kelly. C.P. (a nephew of the late Father Vincent Gropan), and the Rev Benedict Donegan, C.P. The former has been appointed to the Rectorship of St Paul's Retreat, Adelaide, recently vacated by the Rev. Father Tlilarv. Father Benedict vaill probably he appointed as assistant priest in the Marrickville parish. A strike more amusina than serious has occurred in a most unexpected quarter. A Conciliation Board, sitting at Kalgoorlie for the purpose of settling a dispute in the butchering trade, engaged a shorthand-writer to record the evidence. The Government refused to authorise payment for his services, thus making the members of the Board personally responsible. This was resented, and, after the evidence was taken and the hcarinft closed the Board refused to publish its decision until the Government paid the amount in dispute. The Conciliation Board established by the Arbitration Act intended to avert strikes, but they going out on strike affords the most amusing episode in connection with the working of the new* Act.
