(From our own correspondent.) November 3. His Lordshop Bishop Grimes was present among a representative gathering of citizens on Tuesday evening last on the occasion of a presentation to Mr. A. E. G. Rhodes (Mayor of the city during the Royal visit) and Mrs. Rhodes, from the Canterbury residents. A meeting of citizens was held during the week, at \\hich his Worship the Mayor presided, to arrange a fitficers and crew of the Antartic relieving vessel Morning, iicers and crew of the antartic lelieving vessel Morning, which is expected to put in an appearance at Lyttelton at any tume. A musical social was given last week at Papanui in aid of the funds of the local Catholic school, which is conducted by the Sisters of Mercy, of St". Mary's, Colombo street. Among those who assisted at what was a very successful and enjoyful entertainment, were the Misses Katie Young, Pender, and Moir. The comfort of patrons and visitors was carefully attended to, whilst the duties of secretary were efficiently performed by Mr. H. McElroy. A party arranged by Mrs. Mead and Miss Hay war dl gave recently a musical entertainment at Mount Mag r dala, which was very highly appreciated. Mr. H. Hayward attended with his phonograph and gave a number o.f new records just received from England^ much to the enjoyment of the audience., many of those present listening to the marvellous invention for the first time. Miss Katie Young, the talented young- pianist and organist of St. Mary's Church,, Manchester street, gave a notable pianoforte performance at the Christchurch Musical Society's concert in the Canterbury Hall last week. Miss Young, who is solo pianist of the Society, received a triple recall for her selection. His Lordshjip Bishop Grimes was among the audience. The Very Rev. Dean Foley has been giving a mission during the week at Loburn, in the Rangiora parish. His Lordship the. Bishop preached at Vespers in the Pro-Cathedral on Sunday on ' Devotion to the souls in purgatory.' The monthly procession of the Blessed Sacrament followed. The Very Rev. Vicar-General, attended by the Rev. Fathers O'Connell and McDonnell gave Benediiction. A representative of sectarian bigotry is attending various political meetings and putting- this question to candidates : — ' Are you in favor, of official inspection of convents ? ' Mr. W. W. Tanner, whom we have not forgotten for expressed bitterness during the Stoke affaiir, answered ' Yes,' without giving any reason for so doing. Mr. T. H. Davey, one of the city candidates, answered emphatically ' No,' and characterised the question as most impertinent, and summed up the questioner in terms not complimentary to that individual and those prompting him. In a cricket match played at Lancaster Park on Saturday, a team representing the Christchurch Catholic Club, defeated A. J White's Cricket Club by 25 runs on the first innings. For the losing players Richards and Peat bowled well, whilst for yie winning side Canavan and Winchester did good and effective service. Richards, Barratt, and Walles were prominent batters for White's, and P. O'Connell, Reddinpton and F. Cronin for the Catholiic Club team. In the primary schools competition the Marist Brothers' school defeated the West Christchurch school by 70 tuns and six wickets. The Marist Brothers' boys made 123 for four wickets (Murphy 45 retired, P Edmonds 25, L. Edmonds 14 retined, and Murfitt 11).
