DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN.

The Month's Mind for the late Mother M. Agnes, 0.5.D., wil take place at St. Joseph's Cathedral on Tuesday morning next, 11th inst., at 7 o'clock. The pupils of the Christian Brothers' school did remarkably well at the Dunedin Musical and Elocutionary Competitions. In the recitation for boys under 15, we find the names of five of the pupils of the Christian Brothers in the list of 81 entrants. When all the competitors had recited the judges, before ooming to a final decision, called on the six best to appear again. Four of these six were the Christian Brothers' boys — viz., P. T. Laffey, H. Soott, W. O'Connor, and L Coughlan. In the final H. Soott was placed first and L. Coughlan third. In the Shakespearian recitation, open to boys and girlß under 16, P. J. Wilson, of the Chriatian Brothers' school, was placed first, sixteen competing. A well-attended meeting was held in St. Patrick's schoolroom^ South Dunedin i on Monday evening, for the purpose of taking steps to organise an entertainment on behalf of the St. Vincent de Paul Orphanage. The Rev. Father Coffey presided, and among those pnesent" were several members of the Cathedral parish. The matter was taken up- with the greatest enthusiasm, and it was eventually decided to give a dramatic and musical entertainment in the Princes Theatre on December 19. There was a very large attendance at the Foresters' Hall, Por Chalmers, on Friday evening, when the pupils of the Conven school gave a very successful musical and dramatic entertainment To provide for the dramatic part of the programme the stage had been enlarged, and the hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion. The first item on a lengthy programme was the chorus ' Zealandia,' by the pupils, which was given in a very creditable manner, the accompaniments being played by Miss Heller. This was followed by a duet on four pianos, played with considerable ability by Misses Anderson, Heller, Fergueon, Hart, Borlase, Craig, Cox, and Brosnan. ' Penny all the way ' was nicely sung by Master Connolly, the accompanist being Miss Hart. Miss Brosnan accompanied the action song, ' Little cooks,' which was sung by a number of girls in the junior class. Masters J. Anderson, W. Anderson, L. M'Cann, S. King, and W. Hart went through some dumb-bell exercises in a creditable manner. The vocal tria ' Wild sea flowers ' was well rendered by Misses Salter, Hart, and Anderson, Miss) Ferguson accompanying. A dialogue, ' Domestic Squabbles,' was given by Master and Miss M'Cann ; and the selection ' Orazione,' on four pianos, was successfully played by Misses Miller, Borlase (2), Hart, Brosnan, Ferguson, Craig, and Cox, which concluded the first part. A dramatic sketch ' The rough diamond,' the parts in which were taken by the Misses Heller, Salter, Cox, Hart, Borlase, and Hart, was nicely mounted and well played. Master King sang ' Pat of Mullingar,' and the pupils successfully gave ' The United Kingdom,' the accompanists being Misses Anderson and Ferguson. In the second part a duet on four pianos, ' San souci,' was brilliantly played by Misses Heller, Ferguson, Craig, Brosnan, Cox, Borlase, Anderson, and Hart. A vocal gavotte, ' Trip, trip,' was sung by eight little girls. Miss Heller sang ' We'd better bide a wee.' A dramatic sketch, ' He would be an author,' was given by Miss A. Borla«e, Masters W. Anderson, M'Cann, W. Hart, and Conolly. The senior girls sang ' Beautiful star,' and an action song, ' The tall top hat,' was given by the boya. A selection of Scotch airs was pl&yed on four pianos ; a number of girls went through Borne ball exercises ; Master Neal, Lilburn, and Read sang a comic tr ; o ; and the girls gave an action song, ' Flowery garlands,' very prettily. The entertainment on the whole was very good, and the audience showed their appreciation by frequent applaus". The performers went through their work in a manner which reflected great credit on their d«-voted teacht-rs, the Sisters of St. Joseph.
