T I M A R U.

(From our own correspondent.)

September 29.

Through the energy of Rev. Father Tubman and his Albury parishioners matters are so advanced that tenders are now called for the erection of a new church in stone in that district This will no doubt be shortly followed by a move b^ing made to erect another church at St. Andrews which will necessarily keep Father Tubman and his rev. confrere pretty busy. The St. John's Tennis Club have fixed their opening day for the season on Thursday the 9th Ootober. The courts have been thoroughly renovated and given good weather a large number of members and visitors i 8 expected to be present. Everything points to a most enjoyable and successful opening. Mr P. Reilly, of the Melville Hotel, and Detective Fitagerald, who made a trip to the Old Country, returned last week, both looking well after their holiday. Detective Fitzgerald noticed a marked change for the better amongst the people at Home since he first left the country some 18 years ago. The manner of living and the rates of wages show a decided improvement. The sceptics who doubted the wisdom of the breakwater extension have now a tangible proof of their error. The extension, which has virtually made the harbor as calm as a mill pond, has now assumed considerable proportions. The rubble extends 1375 ft the visible length above water being HTBft. The total quantity of rubble deposited to date amounts to 129,691 tons and the staging is erected to a distance of 1425 ft. Four new spans have been erected during the month and although the funds are getting visibly smaller the work is being pushed on with all possible energy. His Lordship Dr. Grimes gave a retreat to the boarders of the Convent of the Sacred Heart during the week. On Saturday last the Bishop left to pay his episcopal visit to Albnry and Fairlie, celebrating Mass at Albury on Sunday and proceeding to Fairlie, where he administered the Sacrament of Confirmation, preached and gave Benediction in the afternoon. Very Rev. Dean Foley celebrated both Masses at Fairlie. He was accompanied by the Rev. Father Tubman. The collection for the Christchurch Cathedral was very suocesasfui amounting to about £50. His Lordship lays the foundation stone of the Makikihi Church (Waimate parish) on Sunday next, pays hia episcopal visit to Waimate during the week, and visits Morven, the new township of the Waikakahi settlement, on the following Sunday. The Bishop, Dean Foley,' and Father Tubman were the guests of Mr Nicholas O'Toole, of the Gladstone Hotel, during their stay at Fairlie.
