Retirement of Inspector Pender.
Inspector Pendkr of Wellington, is to retire shortly from the police forw, and on Monday Sir Robert Stout, the Chief Justice, on the occasioi of the opening of the criminal sessions of the Supreme Court, took occasion to refer to Mr. Pender's services to the Colony. In his address to the Grand Jury the Chief Justice said (writes the correspondent of the Otatjo Daily Times) th>*t-. in consequence of the new regulations under the Police Aot Mr. Pt-nder would retire in about two months. He thought that when he waa dealing with the criminal business it was only due to a public servant like Mr. Pender to take notice of his retirement. He knew Mr. Pender had served his country and the ptople of this Colony well. He entered the police force in Ireland about fifty-six years ago while quite a youth. He then joined the aruiy, and did good servica in the Crimea ; and he was in Victoria in the stirring times. Some forty yearß ago, he came to this Colony to do police duty in Canterbury. His Honor went on to say he knew personally tbe great services Mr. Pender had rendered, and he could say of his own knowledge that no man in the public service had had a higher sense of duty or had more faithfully and impartially performed his duty. He felt sure that on his retirement into private life Mr. Pender would carry with him the good wishes of all good citizens. Police officers who were fearless and impartial in the discharge of their duty and guided by common sense were of immense service to a community, and had much to do with the maintenance of public order and the prevention or crime. The Grand Jury presentment : — ' The Grand Jury desire to take this opportunity of placing upon record i;s regret at the approaching retirement of In-pectcr Pender and its c mcurrence with the remarks of his Honor the Chief Justice concerning the Inspector^ able efforts in the suppression and detention of crime during his supervision of the Wellington district.
