FRANCE. — An Unauthorised Association.
A Parisian newspaper report-* the following flagrant cape of interference with liberty of conscience : — 'A captain of artillery, M. de Gigord, in giirritou at Chalons sur-Marue. was a few days ago summoned before oi.e of the aides-de-cam pa of General Andre, who told him that he had he mi that he belonged to an unauthorised as-ociation. " Pardon me," replied Captain de Gigord, "I am not a Freemason." '-That may be so," was the reply, " but your name appears on the lists of the Society of bt. Vincent de Paul. Is it not so?" " Oh, yes. that is perfectly tru* ," said M. de Gigord, " but that society is purely charitable in aims. It occupies itself solely with works of ehurity, and politics are rigorously kept out." "Then you formally acknowledge that you belong to this Society of St. Vincent de Paul ? " asked the Jack-in-office. " Yes." The interview came to an end, and the next day Captain de Gigord was moved to Castres.'
