GOLD IN IRELAND.

In 1776 an Irish schoolmaster, while out fishing, made an unexpected and quite accidental discovery of gold in Wicklow. He kept the discovery to himself as long as he could, but at last the secret leaked out, and a rush commenced. In a very short time 2500 ounces of gold were collected, worth £10,000. One nugget was found which weighed 22 ounces, and another of 18 ounces ; and the gold was in its native state of such purity that the Dublin gold* smiths were prepared to buy it at its own weight in guineas.
